BSA 1926 “S26 de Luxe” 493 cc side valve frame # U1861 engine # M6664
In the second part of the nineteen twenties the motorcycle market is growing fast in Britain. But rivalry between the factories is intense and the profits are modest. The whole industry is fighting a price-cutting war that has been started by the incredibly cheap model P Triumph that cost just under 43 pounds when brought out in 1925. But BSA stands firmly in the market and brings out an extensive range in 1926: no less than 13 models are listed, and some 16 types of sidecars, including commercial carriers. The solo machines range from a 249 cc side valve single to the 986 cc “Colonial” V-twin model. The 493 cc, with bore x stroke of 80 x 98 mm, is a popular “dual purpose” model, suitable for both solo riding and sidecar service. The model is available in standard form with 1½ gallon petrol tank and in De Luxe specification with larger 2 1/8 gallon tank. The De Luxe also has a bigger front mudguard, a higher ground clearance, more beefy tyres and a comfortable Terry spring seat saddle. The footboards are available at extra cost. The S26 is fitted with BSA’s own 3-speed hand-change gearbox and lubrication is effected by a mechanical total-loss pump.
Our S26 was sold new in Denmark and registered on February 6, 1926. Various pre-1940 Danish registration and insurance documents have been kept with the machine. She migrated to The Netherlands in 2014 and has been used regularly for Vintage Club runs since. She’s an older restoration and comes with Lucas electric lighting, bulb horn, rear view mirror and practical side stand.
