Evans 1921ca Power-Cycle 91 cc two stroke frame # 1930 engine # 34270
The Cyclemotor Corporation of Rochester, New York, starts producing a self-contained power pack for attachment to a pedal bicycle in 1916. In 1919 the company steps up and offers a complete machine, the Evans Power-Cycle. It’s a light, well-made and graceful machine that is powered by a 91 cc two-stroke engine and weighs a mere 37 kilogrammes. The company promises a top speed of more than 45 km/h, but advises to operate the Power-Cycle at an average of 25 km/h to ensure longer life for the little engine. The machine is cheap to run, the firm promises that a litre of petrol mixed with 1/8 litre of oil will be sufficient for a 45-kilometre ride. Ignition is provided by an American Bosch type BAL magneto, which also powers the electric front and rear lights. A sprung front fork is fitted and the brake is of the coaster-type, applied by pedalling backwards. A Morse silent chain drives the magneto and the drive pulley. The wheels are 28-inch and ignition advance and throttle are operated by the handlebar twist-grips. Drive to the rear wheel is by belt.
The standard model is finished in black with gold lining, at additional cost the machine can be finished in dark blue, Harley-Davidson green or Indian red. The Dutch brochure for 1922 proudly displays the subtitle “King of the Light-Weights” ; that title has respectfully been granted to the Evans by the editor of the major Dutch motorcycle magazine of the time. The Power-Cycle becomes popular both in the U.S. and in Europe. By 1925 the production is taken over by Stock, a Berlin-based motorcycle manufacturer, who enlarges the capacity to 119 cc. Production ends around 1933.
The machine we present here has been sold new in France. A brass plate on the top-tube mentions the Evans was supplied by “A. Robin, Dieulefit, Drôme”. The saddle is an original Troxel and the little machine has been restored a number of years ago.
