Harley-Davidson 1934 “VFD” 1217 cc side valve V-twin frame # C188 engine # 34VFD1663
There are various new features for the 1934 model year, many being mainly cosmetic. The cylinders are modified and new tank graphics with “Flying Diamond” design are introduced. Frames and forks are now completely heat treated and the company states that this “adds full fifty per cent more strength”. The mudguards get a new shape and a new “Airflow” tail lamp is fitted. 1934 wil be the only year of the upswept “Hi -Flo” tailpipe. This novel feature is enthousiastically announced in the 1934 sales brochure but will disappear the next year. “The Hi-Flo muffler tail pipe on the Twins carries the exhaust gases upward and back so they will not annoy and become troublesome to the rider and to his passenger, either in the sidecar or on the Buddy Seat. “
The model VFD is introduced in 1934 with configuration “Standard, medium compression, nickel-iron pistons”. The engine delivers 28 hp @ 4,000 rpm and has a compression ratio of 4.0:1. The model is catalogued in 1934, 35 and 36. The VFD with sidecar specification is the VFDS, and of this type in 1934 1330 machines are sold. Interestingly, the VFD we offer can be considered an ultra-rare model: according to the Harley Davidson Data Book only five VFD machines leave the factory that year.
Our VFD, finished in the factory colour combination Orlando orange and black, was imported from the USA in The Netherlands in 1985. In the years 2008-2012 she has been restored; this process has been photographically recorded in more than 80 images in an accompanying bound album. The last owner cherished her from May 2012 till recently, and all this time she has been proudly displayed on a prominent place in his house, and has not been ridden. She comes with photostat copy of 1930s H-D handbook and rear view mirror and has a current Dutch registration.
