Introduced in 1931, the Model R series was the successor of the Model D. The latter had the generator mounted vertically, which proved a vulnerable design point. So with the new R the generator was placed horizontally in front of the engine and driven by a conventional gear drive directly from the timing gear train. Consequently, a newly designed and heavier frame was designed for the R, with a forward curving front downtube. The front forks were also strengthened to make the R suitable as a sidecar machine. Clutch and gearbox were of heavier construction; the previous model D had used the clutch and gearbox that were the same pattern as the single cylinder models. Many other parts were of sturdier construction than those used on the D and the model R would last till 1937, when the new Model W range came that was finally fitted with a dry sump oiling system.
1933 was the first year frame, forks and chainguards were painted black. Tank graphics were in the new Art Deco Eagle design and later in the model year the Schebler carb was replaced by a Linkert.
The pleasing combination we present here is the RE, with magnesium-alloy pistons and low compression of 4.3:1. This engine was good for 17 hp @ 4000 rpm. The 1933 output at Harley-Davidson was extremely low, only about 550 Rs were produced in various configurations. The 1209 cc heavy twin sales were a bit better with about 2,000 machines being sold.
This very correct and well-restored combination is finished in Black and Mandarin Red colours, has a current Dutch registration and is an excellent runner. The sidecar is a Goulding LS 29, Model B. Accessories include lighted Corbin speedo, handlebar-mounted search light, rear view mirror, leather pouches and tyre pump. Two brake lights are fitted, one on the rear mudguard and one at the back of the sidecar. Documentation includes some photos of the restoration, various bills for parts and services, riding and maintenance hints and photostat copies of Rider’s Handbooks.
