The real landmark year for Indian was 1907 when the company introduced the first of its mighty V-twins, the rear cylinder of the early models continuing to form part of the frame until 1909. In that year the loop frame was adopted and continued development and innovation saw the development of the overhead valve, four-valves-per-cylinder racers in 1911. The hugely popular PowerPlus, a 61 cu.in. (998cc) flathead V-twin, appeared in 1916. The mighty engine drove through a three-speed, hand-change gearbox, with foot-operated clutch and all-chain drive. The side-valve engine of the PowerPlus proved utterly reliable and almost unbreakable and the model enjoyed a nine year production run. For model year 1919 only minor changes are made: the gearbox gets larger bearings and an oil groove in the enlarged mainshaft improves lubrication. The valve chambers are larger and the engine main and bigend bearings are made to closer tolerances for better wear resistance. The conspicuous black band striping edged with thin gold lines that was introduced for the 1917 model year is continued for 1919. However, this will be the last year, 1920 models will become less outspoken in this respect with two parallel thin gold lines as finishing touch.
This impressive motorcycle was delivered new to The Netherlands in 1919 and has been in the former owner’s family since the nineteen thirties. She comes with full electric lighting with claxon horn, extra STOP rear lamp, Bosch magneto, Splitdorf generator and amp gauge. Further equipment comprises Corbin 130 km speedo, rear view mirror and practical side stand. She has been restored a number of years ago and is road-registered.
