Harley-Davidson’s 1930 brochure describes the new 74ci (1217 cc) machine as “standing head and shoulders above all comers, with such startling new features as a 20% more powerful motor with Ricardo removable heads, interchangeable wheels, bigger tires, drop-centre rims, lower riding position, greater road clearance, automatic increase of generator output, drop forged forks, 100% stronger frame, theft proof lock, dual front drive chain, improved clutch, and many other features making the 1930 Big Twin the greatest motorcycle value ever offered.”
Despite its maker’s evident enthusiasm, the model V is far from an instant success. More massively built and heavier than its predecessor, the V lacks top-end power to such an extent that the first examples are recalled for an extensive engine redesign. A larger crankcase accommodating heavier flywheels does the trick and, its problems solved, the model goes on to win the hearts of Harley enthusiasts everywhere.
The model range comprises no less than 23 variations, ranging from the VC “low compression commercial, nickel iron pistons” that turned out 25 hp @ 4000 rpm to the VLD “high compression, Dow metal pistons” that is good for 36 hp @ 4500 rpm. The machine we present is the VLE, “standard, medium compression, magnesium alloy pistons” that has an output of 30 hp @ 4000 rpm. The engine has bore x stroke measurements of 87.31 x 101.6 mm and is fitted with battery and coil ignition. The VLE is only produced in 1933 and not many have been sold, as 1933 is a very bad year for the company due to the devastating effects of the economic Depression.
There are not many changes for the 1933 model year: the headlamp glass is no longer flat but convex and the petrol tank decoration takes the form of an Art Deco eagle. 1933 is also the first year that frame and forks are finished in black as standard and that a number of attractive colour combinations are offered; the olive or Brewster Green colours that have been the rule since the end of the first World War are finally finished. For 1934 the tank graphics will be changed to the “Flying Diamond” design, so it is easy to recognize a 1933 model. There are 5 colour options for the 1933 twins; this impressive VLE is finished in black and mandarin red with gold striping.
Our VLE has been excellently restored and has been part of an important Japanese collection since the summer of 1999. It’s believed she was purchased at Verrall’s in May 1999.
