BMW 1964 R 50/2 494cc transverse twin combination frame & engine # 636873

In 1955 BMW creates its R50, R60, and R69 models. These new models have a similar engine and the same shaft-drive as earlier models, but are fitted with modern swingarm rear suspension for the first time. The telescopic forks at the front of earlier models are abandoned though, in favour of the swinging or “Earles Fork” system. The cycle parts are finished in BMW’s signature black scheme set off by white pin striping. The models have plenty of power to pull an optional Steib sidecar. BMW has always built expensive motorcycles, but you got what you paid for. The make has gained an enviable reputation for long-lasting reliability and the quality of the black enamel finish. Ten thousands of R50s were built between 1955 and 1969 with few changes over the years; in 1960 the /2 series came out with higher compression ratio, slightly more power and Bosch instead of Noris electrics. The R 50/2 delivers 26 HP @ 5,800 rpm and has a top speed of circa 140 km. The petrol tank holds 17 litres, good for 340 km.

This specimen forms a combination with a Steib sidecar and was first registered in The Netherlands on September 4, 1966. The former owner acquired the machine as a solo mount in 2001 and, with help of a BMW specialist, fully restored her in 2002-2003. The restoration process has been documented in more than 100 photos. A suitable Steib sidecar has been restored and fitted. This sidecar comes with windscreen, comfortable seat and cover. Since 2003 no more than 6,500 kilometres have been covered. This reliable and well- restored combination comes with Pagusa saddle and pillion seat, rear light guard and handlebar-end turn signals.
