Velocette 1947 KSS 348 cc OHC single frame # KDD 9064 engine # KSS10301

The firm of Veloce Ltd. was formed in 1905 by Johann Goodman. It was a family business that concentrated on sound motorcycle engineering principles. Their first machines were lightweight four strokes; after that a line of top-class 250 cc two strokes was brought out. In 1924/25 Percy Goodman designed the 350 cc overhead camshaft model K, a machine destined to win many TTs and other races, starting with the 1926 Junior TT that was won by Alec Bennett, who finished ten minutes ahead of the second placeman.
The model KSS (K for overhead camshaft, SS for super sports) first appeared in 1925. It had a power output of about 19 HP at 5,800 rpm. From the KSS the successful KTT was developed, this was the first over-the-counter production racer to become available to the general public. In 1933 the KSS got a four speed gearbox and in 1935 the KSS was completely redesigned.
This Mk.II was launched at the 1935 motorcycle show and featured a brand-new alloy cylinder head, with valve gear fully enclosed and carburettor at a downdraught angle. Tappet adjustment was by an eccentric rocker spindle, as had been used on some racers earlier. The new engine was housed in a frame that came from the racetrack too, being based on the Mk.V KTT. There weren’t too many changes to the new model, it being built up until the Second World War stopped production, then coming back following peace. The last machines, made during the last half of 1948, had Dowty Oleomatic ‘air’ telescopic front forks, and a different petrol tank. Production stopped because the OHC engines became to costly to produce and assemble as compared to the OHV models.
The machine we present here is an older restoration in good condition. Bore x stroke are 74 x 81 mm, compression ratio 7.0:1 and top speed around 70 mph or 110 km/h. She weighs around 150 kg and is fitted with Akront alu rims, Smiths 80 mph speedo and rear view mirror.
The KSS remains one of the most sought-after models by enthousiasts who appreciate a really good British motorcycle with an impeccable pedigree.
