Rudge 1922 “7/9 h.p. Three speed Twin” 998 cc IOE V-twin combination frame # 806160 engine # 24370 gearbox # 467

Already before the outbreak of WWI the company started development work on a twin version of the Multi, but it was only in November 1919 that the new twin, meant as a powerful sidecar machine, was introduced. It was fitted with a dropped frame that provided a lower seating position and gave the new model an appealing, modern look.
At first it was fitted with the famous “Multi-Gear” system that was based on the possibility to vary the diameters of both front and rear pullies, like the well-known DAF Variomatic system. By moving a long lever alongside the petrol tank about 18 different gear ratios could be selected. While on the move the rider could choose the engine rpm that gave most engine torque and then he could raise the actual speed of the machine by changing the gear ratio with the “multi- lever“ without actually raising the engine rpm. For the 1921 range the Multi-Gear system was abandoned though in favour of Rudge’s own 3-speed gearbox and primary and secondary chain drive, with shock absorber on the engine shaft. The primary chain cover, rear chain guard and footboards were made in aluminium. New for the “Multwin” were the quickly detachable and interchangeable wheels. The brakes were typical for Rudge too, with aluminium external brake shoes that pressed against a flange on the side of the wheel rims. Carburettor fitted is Senspray, the magneto is an ML. The sidecar’s upholstery is in as-new condition and a tonneau cover is fitted. Accessories include a bulb horn and a comfortable period Tan-Sad pillion seat. In 1923, the last year of the Multwin, a four speed gearbox was fitted.
The combination we present here is an older restoration, first registered on July 7, 1922. She’s been part of a private Rudge collection for 40 years and certainly is a rare machine: the Multwin was an expensive machine and sold in very moderate numbers. The VMCC Register of Machines lists no more than six survivors. More info on the Multwin can be found in the January 1990 issue of The Classic Motor Cycle.
