In the late thirties BMWs were sold in considerable numbers, in spite of their high prices.
The make had built up an excellent reputation for quality and luxury: from 1938 on all BMWs had both front and rear springing, a feature which was very uncommon for most other makes. From 1938 till the war stopped production of civilian bikes all BMW twins shared a common frame and common cycle parts. All engines were interchangeable and shared the same transmission. Only the rear axle ratios were different.
The 745 cc engine with bore and stroke of 78×78 mm, has a compression ratio of 5.5 : 1 and a power output of 22 HP @ 4600 rpm. Fuel tank capacity is 14 litres, top speed 125 km/h, weight around 190 kg. Between 1938 and 1941 some 3,500 civilian R71s were manufactured. The model was also popular with the German armed forces because of its excellent roadholding qualities, engine power, reliability and ease of maintenance.
This R71is a matching-numbers older restoration and has been carefully ridden by a Dutch Vintage Motorcycle Club member. The absence of lining on the mudguards is correct, the R71 is only lined on the petrol tank, as were all other 1936-1941 twins. The singles kept the elaborate lining, and after the war the lining on the mudguards reappeared on the twins too. From 1938 the German authorities had restricted the use of chromium, so the wheel rims were finished in black and silver.
Our R71 recently got new tyres and electronic ignition has been fitted. Originally the machine had a sidecar gearing, but this has been changed to a solo ratio. This reliable and sturdy R71 comes with photostat copy of German manual and would be an excellent choice for the enthusiast who likes to ride a pre-war machine with post war specifications and comfort.
