what a great guy; had the pleasure meeting him a couple of times (in my gallery time in Amsterdam - where he also made this drawing) and also the pleasure meeting him a hole afternoonwith his family in New Jersey + his studio. Whow.. really enjoyed it. There he also personally signed this artwork (incl. Captain Impossible.. another canvas I have .
Beautiful metal sign(hand signed and with unique handmade drawing during a show of Ron English in Amsterdam"Absente", Absinthe liqueur, produced by M.P. Roux and made by contemporary American artist Ron English (Dallas, 1959) depicting Van Gogh.
His work plays with the symbols of consumerist pop culture and with the languages of advertising, clearly the influence on him of Andy Warhol, of which he is considered an heir. Among his most famous works is Abraham Obama, a portrait in which English blends the faces of the two American presidents Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama and who contributed, together with Shepard Fairey's posters, to transform the image of the first president of the United States of color in a pop icon.
Ron English voiced himself in an episode of The Simpsons entitled Exit Through the Kwik-E-Mart (season 23 episode 15), a clear reference to the film made by street-artist Banksy Exit Through the Gift Shop.
Ron English coined the term “POPaganda” to describe his trademark fusion of high and low imagery, mixing superheroes and comic strips with art history iconography in his prolific and ubiquitous paintings, billboards, and sculptures. English has imagined a vast (and still growing) roster of characters, including MC Supersized, his obese fast-food mascot that was featured in the documentary Supersize Me (2004), and Abraham Obama, a mash-up of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents. He is best known for combining expert draftsmanship with a cynical, humorous critique of American culture.
