Harley-Davidson 1921 Model “F” 989 cc IOE V-twin frame & engine # 21F3331
1909 marks the appearance of Harley-Davidson’s first v-twin, though it’s not until the adoption of mechanically operated inlet valves in 1911 (replacing the ‘atmospheric’ type inherited from the single) that production really takes off. This ‘F-head’ (inlet-over-exhaust) engine will remain in production for the next 19 years. Year by year the models are further developed and in 1921 a larger-capacity 1212 cc engine becomes available alongside the well-tried 989 cc power source. New features for the 1921model year are one-piece tubular steel handlebars and full valances on the front mudguard.
The lavish 32-page 1921 catalogue focuses on motorcycling as a universal sport and a relaxing pastime: “Everyone who works five or six days a week steadily needs recreation, enjoyment, a change of scene, to build up energy and freshen the mental equipment for each succeeding day or week. Notice the motorcyclist. He’s full of energy and enthusiasm as a result of his association with the great outdoors. The fresh, clean air of the open country is his stimulus, his bracer, the year around.”
Notwithstanding these enthusiastic approach, 1921 is not a very good year for the company: from mid-March to mid-April the factory is temporarily closed down due to low sales. Some 7,000 1000 cc twins are produced this year, about a third of the 1920 production.
The machine we present here, finished in a striking white colour, is an older restoration in good condition. She has been part of a static collection for years and comes with current Belgian registration. Accessories include Old Sol acetylene front lamp, Perfection rear lamp, handlebar-mounted Prest-O-Lite acetylene tank and Klaxon push horn.
